Perimenopause and the Microbiome as a Rite of Passage
There are seasons in a person's life that feel less like a gentle unfolding and more like a threshold. Perimenopause is one of them I reckon. It arrives quietly for some and like a storm for others, reshaping sleep, mood, energy, identity, relationships and the sense of who you are in the world.
Many people arrive at this transition feeling unprepared. The body they have lived in for decades begins responding differently. Foods that once felt fine now trigger bloating or heat. Sleep becomes lighter or even non-existent. Emotions sit closer to the surface. Joint aches whisper at the edges of awareness. There is often a sense of being both overwhelmed and strangely alert or heightened, as though something inside is asking to be heard.
Perimenopause is a biological process, but it is also a rite of passage. A time of profound recalibration. A time that can feel messy, raw, or confronting. And yet, when met with understanding rather than fear, it can also become a remarkable opportunity to reclaim vitality, slow down, and nourish the body in ways that support the decades ahead.
At the centre of this transition sits the microbiome.
Why the Microbiome Matters in Perimenopause
The microbiome is not simply a digestive companion. It influences inflammation, mood, metabolism, sleep, cognition and hormonal balance. As we move through perimenopause, oestrogen (and other hormone) levels fluctuate significantly. These shifts affect the gut, and in turn, the gut affects how we metabolise oestrogen.
One key player is the estrobolome, the collection of microbial genes in the gut that process oestrogen. When the estrobolome is balanced, oestrogen metabolism flows more smoothly, supporting steadier mood, clearer thinking, and more predictable cycles. When it is disrupted, symptoms may intensify.
Gut changes in perimenopause can contribute to:
changes in bowel habits
increased histamine sensitivity
bloating or digestive discomfort
shifts in weight distribution
disrupted cholesterol balance
inflammation affecting joints, brain and skin
This does not mean the body is failing. It means the body is adjusting. And with care, nourishment and attention, the microbiome can become a powerful anchor during this time.
The Nervous System and Midlife
Many people describe perimenopause as a time when the nervous system feels thin. Small stressors feel larger. Sleep becomes more fragile. Old emotional patterns return for review.
There are physiological reasons for this. Oestrogen supports serotonin and GABA, two of the most calming and mood-stabilising neurotransmitters. As oestrogen fluctuates, these pathways become more sensitive.
At the same time, midlife often brings cumulative life stressors. Parenting, caring for ageing relatives, work responsibilities, relationship transitions, grief, identity shifts. The body begins signalling that it cannot run on adrenaline any longer.
This can feel destabilising, yet it also creates an opportunity to open a new conversation with yourself.
Midlife invites honesty. It asks what needs tending. It asks what needs softening and slowing down. It asks where rest, nourishment and reconnection have been neglected.
Perimenopause is an invitation to come home to yourself.
Perimenopause is not a problem to be solved. It is a doorway. A reorientation or recalibration. Symptoms can be extreme for some, for sure, and such symptoms require addressing and should never be dismissed. I find the deeper opportunity lies in slowing right down and reconnection with oneself. Taking space. When was the last time you went away by yourself for 2-3 nights, or even took a whole day just for yourself to do whatever you wanted?
Midlife offers a time to return to the body, not abandon it. A time to reduce unnecessary restriction and bring in more nourishment. A time to support digestion, microbiome diversity and blood sugar steadiness. A time to turn toward herbs that soothe, regulate and restore. A time to strengthen the nervous system, protect bone and brain health, and rebuild energy from the inside out.
When people slow down enough to listen during this season, they often begin reclaiming parts of themselves they had set aside for decades. Creativity returns. Boundaries strengthen. Tenderness grows. The body becomes a source of wisdom rather than chaos and confusion.
A Midlife of Nourishment
If you are anything at all like me, by midlife you are so good at doing all the things for everyone else and putting everyone else's needs ahead of your own that you may have lost your way back to yourself. When was the last time you asked yourself "what do I need right now?" or "what do I feel like for dinner?" rather than what do the kids need or what would they eat for dinner!
Perimenopause offers us a chance to rebuild rhythms that sustain long-term health through:
microbiome-supportive eating
joyful movement
rest that feels spacious rather than stolen
herbs that nourish the nervous system, liver, gut and hormones
simple rituals that bring calm and clarity
community and connection
It's a chance to take hold of your wellness and direct it to the future YOU WANT to live. I often say to my clients "who do you want to be at 75yo?". I know who I want to be, I still want to be able to walk the zigzag track on kunanyi/Mt Wellington, and I still want to be doing headstands in yoga and snorkeling in the sea over summer. How about you? Who do you want to be at 75? It's time to get your 75yo self into the frame and walk in that direction with your health in YOUR hands.
This transition is not meant to be navigated alone. The body responds deeply to support, to community, to rhythm, to being witnessed and understood.
